Los Alamos scientists blow up building with cannon
Cross a group of federal physicists with an unexplained need to recreate a Civil War-era cannon and mayhem is sure to ensue. And it did when a Dec. 16 Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) Occurrence Report noted scientists accidentally caused $3 million in damage to a building after testing a large-bore powder gun. Parts of the cannon were found outside.
The money quote from Peter Stockton, senior investigator at the Project on Government Oversight, “I must say that this is a new twist in the long history of screw-ups by Los Alamos.”
