NASA gets jiggy with it

I guess you’ve got to give NASA and the National Science Foundation credit for trying to shed their nerdiness for a good cause — appealing to young people about the climate change crisis.

But perhaps the ad agency should have tried to form a rap group that didn’t come straight out of Mouseketeer central casting. Though I’ll bet 5- and 6-year-olds across the nation will be grooving to the G-rated beats of:

For real, all it takes is a couple degrees
Before floods, droughts, and hurricanes are not anomalies
And all these catastrophes become our new realities
Comin’ down on the world just like the Sword of Damocles.

Not that NASA needs to “green” the lyrics to “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp” but this just seems a little too … well … painfully square. And not in a quirky, lovable “Real Genius” kind of way.

The Hip Hop Caucus, however, seems to have hit the right note of climate activism and authentic rhymes with its Clean Energy Now tour. Check it out.
