One way for public television to be more relevant is providing local and state news as journalism rapidly disappears for lack of ad revenue. Americans are losing their ability to know what is being done behind the scenes. Laws are being changed that will affect everything from the safety of their families to the security of their bank accounts. Businesses can't find opportunities when no one is reporting on changes in the local economy.
We're trying to do something about that at Colorado Public Television through a startup news operation doing in-depth and investigative reporting. The first stories are on the web at www.coloradopublicnews.org, and they've been on air on the station, on channel 12 in Denver. But we can't do it without you. Original reporting in the public interest on any media will thrive only if ordinary consumers and foundations step up and donate.
